What Drives Agricultural Cycles?

Herendeen, James and Hallberg, Milton Challenge, January/February 1997, pp 72-86

"In 1996 the president signed into law the Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform Act, which, over a seven-year period, removes most of the current price supports and production controls on agricultural commodities. The authors believe that macroeconomic policies may play a role in determining how successful this new program will be."

Direct Investment is Primary Strategy to Access Foreign Markets

Handy, Charles R.; Phil Kaufman; Steve Martinez.    Food Review, USDA, March 1997, pp. 6-12

Foreign direct investment is the major way large food firms reach international markets. Sales from foreign affiliates of U.S. food processing firms were four times larger than U.S. exports of processed foods in 1994. The investments abroad center in food manufacturing, while food retailing accounts for most foreign direct investment in the United States. Typically foreign parent firms own at least half of the assets, with two-way technology transfers. Also foreign direct investment is one way to circumvent some trade barriers, the authors say, citing the example of Besnier producing more Brie cheese in the United States than it would be allowed to import from its operations in France.

The effects of NAFTA on Agriculture

USIS, July 1997, 4p

Though nettlesome issues remain, U.S. agriculture's growth in access, sales, and market share in Mexico and Canada means the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is working.

Feeding the World With Biotech Crops Avery, Dennis The World and I, May 1998, pp 154-161 "By expanding farm output, genetic engineering can play a key role in meeting the food needs of a larger, more affluent human population without further devastating valuable wildlife habitat."

Agriculture: A List of Websites

CRS Issue Brief for Congress. September 17, 1999 http://www.cnie.org/nle/ag-80.html This list provides a sampling of the rapidly proliferating number of agricultural resources available on the Internet. It is not intended to be exhaustive. It is divided into 26 categories. The websites in this report are for reference only. CRS does not guarantee that these websites are active or current, as the Internet is a vital domain in which new websites continually are added and others abandoned. Also, CRS does not make judgements about the partisan nature of the information posted at some addresses, which will reflect biases of the organization maintaining the site.@
