For local calls, the first three minutes are free. The searching algorithms work especially fast, but first of all, you must determine the approximate area you want to look for because the dial directory is divided in hundred parts (i.e. the french "departements"). Otherwise you have to try different departements. How works the french "annuaire electronique" (le 3611) ? Let us assume, for instance, we want to know about Mister Gerard LANGLET, a worldwide specialist of the APL Language, and we just know he lives in France, not far from the town Versailles. With the minitel, it will take less than one minute !
