Dear Patrick,

I am seeking partners for a project (MESART) I will submit for the next TF
MES call. You will find hereafter a short description of this project. Even
if I have got some contacts, I am looking for content providers (history of
art courses), end users (teachers) as well as networks operators (to
support a web server).

Thank you for forwarding this message.

Yours faithfully,

N. Treves

Background

Multimedia educational software will address the next years an important
market place to build up the European information society. It will enable
the users concerned to better benefit from the information technologies
(IT) and to strengthen the position of the multimedia industry. This topic
fits with the CEC orientations (Bangeman report, Green book on education)
as well as the recommendations of the G7 ministerial conference on the
information society "Cross-cultural education and training". In addition,
the cultural domain has not really yet been covered by the IT RTD projects,
neither developed for educational electronic purposes. Implementation of
educational services in the area of the culture will be an important issue,
following to the G7 recommendations which also emphasise the "multimedia
access to the world cultural heritage".

Objective

The aim of this project is to develop a multimedia support to:
* allow history of arts and plastic art teachers to illustrate their
courses by using an interactive electronic support containing a large base
of pictures;
* to provide an exchange network for different schools / universities in
this domain;
* to permit also all kinds of public to accede to a large amount of
information related to the cultural heritage.

Technical Approach

Different schools will provide their pedagogical requirements in order to
define a common multimedia support to access the information. This support
will then be implemented and assessed following to an iterative process.

The technology (Internet / intelligent agents, Intranet / distributed DBs +
Java, CD-ROM) has not been yet chosen. However, in order to take into
account the potential evolution of the requirements, the information will
be acceded using preferably on-line services. As well, IPR management
aspects may constitute a difficulty for the implementation of the services
and will to be seriously considered.

Foreseen commercial exploitation

This project will be a real size experiment, involving partners of
different CEC countries. No financial contribution will be requested to the
users. However, after the project will be completed, the services will
acceded on a paying at the demand basis which will take into account the
kind of users.

Kind of partners searched

Following categories of organisations are expected to participate: schools,
colleges and universities involved in history of art and plastic art
teaching and training; contents providers (museums, art galleries and
publishers); software editors and integrators; network operators.
